By 2000, the kids were getting older and the drive to the beach seemed longer. So we opted to sell Thistle Dew and buy a lakehouse right on Lake Champlain. It was just 4 hours away, and about as different from the beach as you could possibly get (while still being near water).
If you want to 'get away', there is no better place than the Adirondacks...unbelievably peaceful (except for the jetski's in mid-summer). we had great neighbors with a flock of grandkids (anna, emma, sadie, matthew), and couldn't have asked for a better situation....except for the trains. i don't think we ever got used to them rolling past the house at 11:30pm, 2:30am, 5:30am. and the chill in the air never seemed to leave except for the month of july.
i think we inadvertently started a "renovation movement" up there when we fixed up our place. i can remember roger pratt sr asking us why we were redoing the kitchen, cause after all it was "just a camp"... and they all were 'just camps', but what location, right on the water.
by 2006, lake life convinced us on what should have been obvious, the lake is not the ocean. and a not-so-obvious lesson, that if you're lucky, you can find great people everywhere. so we began planning for our return to the outer banks.
