2018: The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same!

Yep, we are still here in Buxton!  Still weather the storms, the flooding (whether it be from the Sound or the Ocean) and continue to marvel at how the weather impacts our daily lives here on Hatteras Island.

Fall of 2017 had us finishing (well almost) painting the outside of the main residence, and before the spring storms hit this year we installed new steps on the beach duplex.

2017 also brought us Beach Nourishment here in Buxton...but even the nourishment didn't stop our predictable winter/spring nor'easters from coming over the dunes onto Cottage Avenue.  Once the winds turn the experts predict we will have wider beaches than anyone has experienced in the past 30 years!

You would think renovating the main house and the beach duplex would keep us busy enough, but just this past December we bought a church that will ensure we never have a moment when we will have nothing to do.  Even so, we are determined to spend a little time on the beach, even so far as getting our 4wd annual pass and fishing licenses.

2018, what else do you have in store for us?

2016 Holdiays

2016 has been quite the year of changes for us!  I retired, we settled into our 2nd house on Cottage Ave and the young Riggs men have a place on Rocky Rollinson (just past Connors).  We rented both levels of Stones Throw in 2015 and 2016 through VRBO, and plan do the same next year.  Latest development is the installation of a webcam in the dining room front window of Upstairs (in the pic beside, its the window to the left of the door).  Try this link to see our beach https://video.nest.com/live/lAOIOzUrTg

March 2015: Dune breached!

Well that didn't last long...not quite 2 years.  i hear there is alot of work this week to shore up some of the damage, but its a long way to Spring.

We are busy with our 2nd place on Cottage Ave (nothing like putting all your eggs in one basket).  But we can't help it, we love Cottage Ave!

This will be the 2nd year we offer both levels of the duplex to vacationers; the upper level is VRBO 462218, the lower level is VRBO 572428.

More Riggs' will be arriving in Buxton for the rental season, everyone is very excited anticipating what lies ahead for us in 2015!

May 2014 Work Party at the Beach

We budgeted 2 weeks to rehab the new place, move Lee there and restore the downstairs unit to vacation status...and we missed our deadline by 1 day.  Not bad, given all the unknowns on the 2nd beach house (also built in the '60s)!  But it did take the "daily grind" to a higher level as the job list expanded rather than contracted during the 1st week.  Once again, the place(s) never looked better as they did as we pulled away at 6:30am heading north...but that is to be expected.  The latest slideshow primarily features pictures of the downstairs vacation unit, as Kathleen had already done most of the cleaning upstairs and the job list was short and sweet.

Check out the custom guest bags and coozies for our guests this year!  For those interested in a quiet vacation, both levels are listed through VRBO, the upstairs unit is 462218 and the downstairs unit is 572428.

Driving Home from Work: 4WD!

Sorry we haven't updated recently, we keep thinking we are going to have an announcement to make (more on that later)...but this weekend's events warranted a post.  Island Free Press has the story, but Pete's Ditch" under route 12 in Frisco had to be repaired.  So this past weekend the county opened up a detour road on the beach, from Lighthouse Road ramp 45 to Billy Mitchell Field ramp 49.  And since Midgett Realty is open weekends, the Buxton folks hopped into Anthony's 4wd and made an adventure out of getting to work!  How cool is that, 4wding to work?  The detour was to be in place til Monday 6am at the latest.  In a disappointing development, the work was completed by 7pm Saturday.  I didn't think it possible that highway work could run ahead of schedule, but i guess there's a first time for everything.  I'll add a slideshow, we only have 3 pics but i think they still give you a sense of driving home from work.... on the beach!

August 2013 Vacation

", It has been awhile since our last posting, so our August visit to the OBX seemed to be a good reason to update the blog.  Renting upstairs to vacationers through VRBO has been a big success (google VRBO 462218), and mom has thoroughly enjoyed being the resident "inn keeper"!  Reviews have been most kind and we appreciate that folks take the time to post them on the VRBO website.  We were 'down 1' this year as Brian couldn't make the trip from Amsterdam (i think he had to travel to Russia for some reason)....but we made the best of it.  Trip down didn't start off so well, unless you call having a car fire on the Jersey Turnpike a good time...but we managed to get Will's Blazer (quite appropriate, eh?) to the beach.  The picture is what we all do when we first arrive, run to the beach in our clothes!  More pictures of our week before Labor Day can be found in the slideshow August 2013 Vacation.

Poor Ewe, and things were going so well...

If we could get away from all the storm info stuff for a moment...i meant to start this post with a "Grand Opening" statement about us listing with VRBO.  But it got me thinking about why we have a place there, and how much fun it is to share the OBX with others.  And then i stumbled on these pictures.  After her accidental dunk (think a wave got her), Ewe just hung off her dad's arm, limp as a rag doll.  We couldn't stop laughing!  If you haven't been here, take a chance...there are plenty of memories to be made.  Search for us in VRBO (listing 462218), or just click on http://www.vrbo.com/462218.  Shore Details will be handling our linens (included).  Should a 1BR fit your needs, we think you'll find the place has generously apportioned spaces, nestled in a neighborhood close to the beach.  Ocean views through many windows, and a peek at the lighthouse!
