Perhaps not so well known is the naval history surrounding the Outer Banks, particularly in the early months of 1942. German submarines preyed on unsuspecting shipping just off the coast near Buxton, resulting in sixty ships lost. It was not until mid summer that the US effectively minimized the threat, using convoy tactics and plane patrols. In many ways the islanders saw war before much of the country, startled by window-rattling explosions, fires burning at sea, and debris and bodies washing ashore. A school teacher on the island wrote a children's book about one of her students (Carol Dillon) amidst these worrisome times. Carol's mom was the Buxton postmaster credited with aiding in the capture of a german spy mapping the coastline. Carol's role in the capture is rumored to be substantial, but you could always ask her, as she owns the Outer Banks Motel (within walking distance of the beach duplex).
The story of Taffey is a fictionalized account with many historically accurate attributes, and is a fun read for elementary to middle school kids. We bought a few copies for our friends, so if you'd like one just ask!
